Im working on a quilt to be gifted to my sister as a wedding present. I really want it to be special but I'm finding it a challange working with someone elses chosen colour palette. The request was "duck egg blue with gold spun through it." When gold got struck off because you cant use cotton if you want gold, yellow was the substitute. I really like this yellow (third from the top) but it just didnt seem to be working for me no matter what design I choose, so I replaced it with something more subtle.
The trouble is I've cut all the squares now... oops! I think it would have looked nice as a binding but now I cant get hold of that fabric ouch!!
I keep taking a break with these half square triangles, I'v taken out 3 fabrics as it all looked a little to busy, played around with the design, completely changed it and have now reverted back to the original design. I think I've just been staring at it for so long I cant see what Im looking for to change. I have a creative block! has this ever happened to you?. I think I need your help, so, what would you change about this? Does it look to busy? Does it need another colour? or have I been looking at it for to long?
Any suggestions?
Nothing. Change nothing. It looks great like that! Good luck! Blocks can be so frustrating, but you'll get through it!! It looks great to me!
ReplyDeleteI think it looks great- leave it alone!!!
ReplyDeleteI have also made that very same pattern (blogged) and had the same probs! I kept noticing two fabrics the same next to each other, but to swop them I would end up having to re-arrange the whole quilt. Have a look at http://www.redpepperquilts.com/ if you are still unsure - she had made dozens of 1/2 square triange quilts
I think it is just lovely as it is :)
ReplyDeleteI think it's lovely and that you should do a yellow binding to bring out the yellow in the top.

I agree with the others. Leave it. It's lovely. And a yellow binding would really make it pop.
ReplyDeleteIf you are truly looking for suggestions, here goes.
ReplyDelete1. I would take a look at the 2 middle diamonds. The one on top has 4 different fabrics and the one on the bottom only 2.
2. The second large diamond on the left has the 2 yellow fabric touching each other twice on exact opposite corners. This could be a good place to swap a square from if you need to.
3. I noticed that all the exterior partial diamonds are the same fabrics. I think that was a great choice and I love the effect. :)
4. For the binding, I think your yellow would have been lovely. I also think that if you have enough extra scraps, that a scrappy binding from the scraps would be just perfect. If not, I think the solid would also make a nice binding.
5. Do you have enough squares to finish the bottom diamonds or is your top complete?
No matter what. Even if you make no changes at all, I think it is still a beautiful quilt and I am sure the recipient will cherish it. I know I would.

I love your quilt top! The colours are beautiful, very calm and serene. I'd go for a binding in the darker blue shade that's already featured in the quilt (if possible). I get the same with big projects - I think you're right - you end up looking at it too much and over-analysing! Once the binding is done it'll have a more 'finished' look anyway and it will all suddenly come together!
ReplyDeletePS - this is exactly what I'd choose if given a choice!
I think the quilt top looks fine as it is. There is a wonderful semblance of balance between the printed fabrics and the solid really creates a nice contrast. With such great balance over all, I would just caution you not to over think it (though I'm quilting about this myself with my next project :) ).
ReplyDeleteGood luck with everything!
I think it looks absolutely perfect, honestly I wouldn't change a single thing. The colours are soothing and just so pretty together. <3
ReplyDeleteI think it looks beautiful! I wouldn't change a thing about it!
ReplyDeleteI think you've looked at it too long. It's great as it is and will be a lovely gift!
ReplyDeleteIt's looking good so far. As far as a binding, the yellow would work well, but personally I would go with the blue. It really depends on if you want something soothing or something that pops. In any case, I hope you can relax and enjoy making it. And no matter what, it's already great, so you can't lose!
ReplyDeleteI think you were right to switch out that yellow. Beautiful as it is, yellow really tends to grab the eye so your more subtle choice works better here. I love your layout, and I wouldn't change a thing, either. I'd choose a blue for the binding - yellow would show too much dirt, I think.
ReplyDeleteI actually think it is perfect the way it is
ReplyDeleteI think it's lovely! Definitely not too busy.
ReplyDeleteI see you made some changes to this already (I'm behind on commenting on WIP posts, as usual!), but I think it looks lovely! The new arrangement looks great to me too, though. I just love the nice soft color palette. Thanks for linking up to WIP Wednesday. : )
